Often described as a <strong>\u201cartificial&nbsp;gut in the lab\u201d<\/strong> the MBRA system enables researchers to grow and monitor an individual\u2019s gut microbiota outside the body.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-system-font-font-family has-large-font-size wp-elements-5e3b5f471d6f292746ae8f8d2379d242 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">Unlike traditional approaches, which provide only single time-point snapshots of the gut microbiota, the MBRA system allows for continuous observation of how microbial communities change over time. Each reactor within the system can be independently controlled, allowing researchers to test multiple conditions simultaneously &#8211; such as different drugs, nutrients (i.e., fibre, polyphenols, tryptophan), or probiotics &#8211; while maintaining consistency across experiments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-system-font-font-family has-large-font-size wp-elements-60c48279dbf4db710bb01191fbfb8198 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">Importantly, the MBRA system can also assess how <strong>different individuals\u2019 gut microbiota respond<\/strong> uniquely to the same dietary or medical interventions. This helps researchers better understand inter-individual variability and supports the development of <strong>precision nutrition and personalised medicine<\/strong> approaches, where therapies can be tailored to the specific microbial characteristics of each person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-system-font-font-family has-large-font-size wp-elements-5b01b6d702b4e76a8042e92a41ae920d wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">Together, this makes the MBRA system a <strong>powerful preclinical platform<\/strong> for understanding how diet and other interventions shape the gut microbiota and influence health. It can be used to rapidly test <strong>promising new gut microbiota-targeted therapies<\/strong> before they are studied in people.
